How it listens

  1. Measure every keyThree analysis windows run at once: a long one for the bass, where notes sit close together, and shorter ones for the treble, where speech moves fastest. Each of the 88 keys gets its own energy reading.
  2. Find what stands outThe room's noise is learned and subtracted, key by key. Keys that rise above it and peak against their neighbours become notes. Hiss in "s" and "sh" sounds becomes soft high clusters.
  3. Strike and re-strikeThe strongest keys are struck, then struck again as the voice changes, so vowels sustain and syllables re-articulate at the speed you set.

The piano is synthesised in your browser: no samples, no MIDI. Grand, Felt and Prepared are three different string models, built when you first press play.
